“If time were to take on human form, would she be your taskmaster or freedom fighter?” – Richie Norton
If you feel like you need some inspiration to help you manage overwhelm, then this blog post is here to help you:
GET A GRIP
Here’s a story of a friend and colleague, Robyn, who experienced the very worst of chaos and overwhelm both at home and at work.
Robyn’s story is an inspiration; she found that if she didn’t get her act together she would be given her marching orders!
The ‘Time Queen’ happens to be a friend of mine from way-back. She qualifies for this title because she pretty-much got fired for her over-committed life and therefore her ability to keep on top of things both at home and at work. A mother of 6 kids; a farmer and later to become a very successful business-woman, Robyn did a thorough ‘Make-over’ of her personal and professional life by turning her ‘Achilles Heel’ into her life’s work.
“How did it get so late so soon?” – Dr. Seuss
As a Past President of the Global Speakers Federation, Classic Yacht Racer and Grandmother to 17 children this very practical professional has traveled the world with her story and experiences to demonstrate how.
After successfully turning around her own life, she started a time management business called ‘Getting a Grip’ and this has now become a theme to her addressing every aspect of life from both a personal and a professional perspective with a series of very readable books. These are packed full of practical tips and tools to reduce overwhelm, increase productivity and free up more hours in our day to do the fun stuff.

TIME MANAGEMENT TOOLS
Robyn introduced me to Stephen Covey’s Model The Time Management Matrix which I found helpful in clarifying my priorities and setting out an appropriate course of action.
Here’s a brief overview of the model, you can learn more about how to apply it to your life here:
How do you use this model? When you’re feeling completely overwhelmed it’s great to take stock and apply some numbers to your tasks:
“The essence of self-discipline is to do the important thing rather than the urgent thing.” – Barry Werne
PROVEN TIME MANAGEMENT PRACTICE
One of my favourite ‘go to’ time management tools is “The Strategic Coach Programme” by Canadian Dan Sullivan, it’s called: ‘Get Out of Overwhelm with Focus, Planning & Free Days’
My default pattern is to be unstructured.
Structure is what I resist in my natural state but I needed to have structure in order to manage my work. BUT I can go from Lazy to Focused in about 30 seconds thanks to this model.
What it does for me is to keep me focused and address the aspects of my work that I’d prefer to leave undone, but mustn’t. (Having a Coach also helps with that.) The Strategic Coach programme time-module works really well for me to this end.
“Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” – Alan Lakein
Fundamentally, I divide my week into 3 types of days:
This format created a dramatic shift for me in managing my time and energy effectively.
“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” – Zig Ziglar
We each have the same amount of time available; it’s just how we make use of it that makes the difference. These ‘Time Tools’ are just three of several to effectively prioritize our time and reduce overwhelm, pressure and the anxiety that these can produce.
We all have moments in our life when we experience a sense of overwhelm and wonder which way is up, at home and/or in your career. It’s at these times when an ‘unreasonable friend’ can help you clarify your situation to help facilitate a solution. When this happens, I’m here. Together we can work through the best way for you to gain control and develop a clear approach for your unique circumstances.
Time is not refundable; use it with intention.
